Soyeon Lee is an animator who is committed to telling compelling stories and believes that animation is an impactful medium that can make people think differently about history and societal issues. Graduating as #5 (top of her class) with a BFA in Film & Animation from South Korea’s most prestigious university, Hongik University in 2024, she also had the opportunity to study abroad at CalArts Motion Design winter training program in 2019, receiving top marks in that course.
Soyeon’s interests include Japanese comic books, Korean literature, and animation. While traveling around the world she has been inspired by various art forms such as illustration, interactive art, projection mapping, and architecture. She has travelled extensively abroad to Spain, the UK, Japan, China, Italy, Australia, and France. In particular, the renowned animator and director, Ahn jae-huun, has been the turning point to her entire art world. His works, especially his animation project about Korean literature, are what inspired Soyeon to become an artist.
Soyeon also has a passion for teaching. She helped Chinese students in Korea learn how to use Maya to create 3D models. Through teaching, she learned that sharing her knowledge helped her feel fulfilled. Now, as a graduate assistant at UConn, she supports DMD professors, helping students solve difficult technical problems.
During her three years at UConn, Soyeon intends to explore a diverse variety of approaches to create her portfolio and develop her VFX and 3D animation skills, while learning about new technologies to create an experimental animated short film for her thesis.
As an artist, Soyeon aims to be engaged in the art world, submitting films to festivals and potentially collaborating with other artists. Her ultimate goal is to become a well-known brand as an artist.
