Areas of Research/Artistic Focus: Interactive Installation and Experiential Design
Michael Toomey is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with an Individualized Major in Interactive Media. He spent several years as a freelance web designer creating websites for fashion brands, music video directors, commercial directors of photography, a New York Times bestselling author, and popular TED speaker. For two-years he worked at the 3rd Street Promenade Apple Store in Santa Monica, CA, teaching classes to customers in the store theater. While a student at UConn, he was hired by the School of Business and Residential Life as a web developer.
Michael is currently a staff member within the Digital Media Department, in charge of the department’s labs and equipment. He works alongside students and faculty on interactive installation projects. He is also currently an M.F.A. candidate focusing his research on interactive media and immersive experiences.
Recent Achievements: AntU Interactive Traveling Exhibit: a traveling interactive museum exhibit that shares the life story and scientific findings of Carl W. and Marian E. Rettenmeyer and their work with Army Ants.
Boston Children’s Hospital Interactive Media Wall: 20′ Interactive Media Wall in the lobby of BCH which allows hospital visitors to interact with and control characters displayed on screen. Over the course of four years, DMD faculty, staff, and students created 25 interactive scenes to be played on the lobby wall.
Fun Fact: I also happen to have the world’s cutest dog, named “Izzy.”
