Graduate Application Process
Overview
Application deadline for Fall 2025 admission: January 11, 2025.
(Note, applicants are not accepted for Spring admission)
Completed applications and portfolio submissions must be received by January 11, 2025 to be considered for funding for a Fall 2025 start.
Graduate Assistantships
Fully-funded graduate assistantships that provide tuition remission, a generous stipend, and excellent health insurance are available. Learn about those positions on our M.F.A page.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the M.F.A. degree must first meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School as specified in the Graduate Catalog. Applicants to the DMD graduate program are not required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) or the GMAT (Graduate Miller Analogies Test).
UConn Graduate School Application
Applicants for the M.F.A. degree must complete the online application to the Graduate School, which includes:
- Three letters of recommendation
- A personal statement of purpose (personal letter of application) detailing why you want to attend this particular program, which faculty you would want to work with, and how you see the program furthering your creative and/or career goals
- Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate level studies mailed to UConn from the providing institution
International Students
For international students: Evidence of English language proficiency using results from one of the standardized tests accepted by the Graduate School. Further English proficiency is required to TA or teach as an Instructor of Record at the University.
M.F.A. Portfolio
- A creative research / artist statement (about 500 words)
- 10-15 examples of work in the form of videos, still images, audio files, or website links

Your portfolio can include process work with more than one image on an individual item.
Size limits: Images (up to 10MB each), Video (up to 500MB each), Audio (up to 60MB each), PDFs (up to 20MB each), Models (Sketchfab) and Other Types (.doc, .docx, .rtf, .xls, .zip, .ppt and .pptx) (up to 20MB each). You may also link to media from YouTube, Vimeo and SoundCloud.

Meet With Us
Finalists for the M.F.A. program are required to have a virtual interview with a member of the DMD Graduate Studies committee. The department will contact applicants to schedule an interview once the portfolio review process is complete.
