Artist Statement
Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that causes dramatic shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels that affect a person’s ability to carry out day-to-day tasks (NIMH). However, the mere definition does not reflect what navigating bipolar disorder may feel like.
Doppel Diner is an experiential learning metaphor where managing emotional states is portrayed through running a diner that is influenced by external weather conditions. Through changes in the gameplay loop, players have an opportunity to live through the experience, get familiar with cycling patterns, and reflect on their mental state, as well as understand the states of mind of others. By aligning with the enjoyment of conventional gaming, Doppel Diner not only raises awareness about bipolar disorder but also combats stigma and fosters a more empathetic understanding of those affected by it. The project aspires to facilitate important conversations and empower individuals to share their condition with family and loved ones.
