DMD Summer 2024 Course Offerings

In summer 2024, all DMD courses will be open to all majors on all campuses (all prerequisites waived!).  Please contact meredith.friedman@uconn.edu with your name and the Summer 2024 course you would like to take (include the session), and she will send you permission number as long as there is space in the class.   

Most courses require the use of a laptop, internet connection, and specific software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud. UITS offers a discounted rate for UConn students. Please be sure to read the detailed course  information below to see whether or not you need a laptop or specialty software for the course.

🔧DMD 1070 Web Design 1
OA - Online Asynchronous
Professor: Ting Zhou

This course provides a practical introduction to the concepts, technologies and strategies for building contemporary websites. The course consists of a series of exercises and projects beginning with basic HTML and increasing in complexity to include CSS, culminating in the development of a multi-page website. The course material also addresses industry trends, standards and practices for producing high-quality web pages, as well as the ability to evaluate web designs for their adherence to current industry standards. Prerequisites of DMD 1002 and 1102 are waived for summer 2024.

  • Required course for BFA in Digital Media Design - Web/Interactive Media Design majors.

📕DMD 2010: History of Digital Culture

Professor Matthew Worwood

This course will examine key episodes in the history of digital technology and digital media from the perspective of the values that (are said to?) adhere to digital culture, particularly as manifested on the web. In doing so, we will learn to view these technologies critically, as historical, cultural, human constructions that impact social systems in society. We will learn to be critical consumers and producers of digital media and to question received understandings of the role of technology in our public and private lives.  

  • Required course for all Digital Media & Design majors.
  • Counts as Content Area 1 and 3 of General Education requirements.

 

 

 


Summer Session 1: May 28 - June 28, 2024

🔧  DMD 1060 Fundamentals of Programming for Game, Web, and Interactive Media Design

Introduction to programming for artists and designers through a combination of lecture and hands-on studio exercises. Students learn the basic principles of computer programming in Processing which set the foundation for future courses in game, web, and interactive media design. Prerequisite of DMD 1001 is waived for summer 2024.

🔧DMD 1101 Design Lab 1 (Photoshop/Raster Imaging)

Exploration of the creation, manipulation, and reception of digital images through project-based work using image-editing software. Through a multi-disciplinary perspective involving art, design, history, and media the course addresses how visual artists produce and synthesize images and digital imagery. Students will develop an understanding of the construction, reception, and consequences of images as a means to inform their own digital image-making. This course will contextualize the process of bitmap image-making using Photoshop within creative frameworks that will enrich the work and discourse in future classes, whether designing a layout, making styleframes, or preparing assets for animation.

Summer Session 2: July 8 - August 9, 2024

🔧DMD 1002 Foundations of Digital Media and Design 2 (Storytelling)

Instructor: Maham Waqar

Introduction to the fundamentals of storytelling through the use of a variety of practical digital media applications. In this course, students explore five different approaches to digital storytelling: 1) storytelling through still images (Photoshop), 2) storytelling through sound (Audition), 3) storytelling through animation (stop motion or traditional hand-drawn animation), 4) interactive storytelling (Twine), culminating in a final film project. Students will have access to all of the high-end equipment needed to produce these works and will work both individually and in small groups in the creation of their digital media projects. Students’ final projects have won awards and been accepted into film festivals!! Prerequisite of DMD 1001 is waived for summer 2024.

📕DMD 3305 History of Computer Graphics  
OA - Online Asynchronous
Professor: Heejoo Kim

This course explores the history of computer-generated imagery (CGI) from its beginnings to the present.  Students will learn how CGI started and what problems existed in its infancy. Throughout the course, students will learn what the trends in computer animation, visual effects, motion graphics, UI/UX, computer game, virtual reality, augmented reality, and new media arts are and where they are headed in the future. In addition to a final project or paper, there will be readings, screenings, and discussions of contemporary and historical works, and critiques and discussions of student projects.

  • Fulfills an art/film/design history/theory course requirement for Digital Media Design majors.
